Today computers have pervaded nearly every sphere of our lives- the newspaper which you read in the morning is formatted and edited through computers, the radio and TV news you hear is made possible by computers and communication networks through satellites, the bill which you get at some hotels and shops is due to computers, the trains that you travel by are scheduled by computers, the cloths that you wear are mostly designed or manufactured with the help of computers, the traffic signal lights you see at major road junctions are coordinated with the help of computers, computerization has been introduced in many state and central government offices, it is being introduced in several fields both by the private and public sectors.
Automation process has already been initiated in many fields and even small and medium scale set-ups are going in for computerisation in most of their areas of functioning. You will find computers being used virtually in all fields and in all types of industries by both the public and private sectors. Efforts are on the way to computerise the different village / panchayat / district / state level government offices in Kerala. Computers are widely used in hospitals, production, manufacturing, designing, testing, transportation, reservation systems, in the field of mass communication and many more. The implications in terms of job opportunities is very clear. As the computer industry is growing at a faster rate in India, it is not very difficult to find a decent job if you have the necessary qualification and experience. Even if you look at export potential, a software career is more promising and rewarding.

The availability of good training professionals is much less than the demand. As a consequence, this has become one of the most highly paid careers.
CAREERS IN SOFTWARE
Software is the programs or sets of instructions given to a computer in order to perform the desired function. Computers are used for solving business problems. A computer is used in jobs which are repetitive and which require speed and accuracy.
SYSTEMS ANALYST
Systems Analysts plan and develop new computer systems. To be effective, they should have a complete understanding of the capabilities and limitations of all the hardware and software that they are dealing with. They meet with the Managers of business to determine what they require the computer to accomplish and the problems the computer should handle. Each task is broken down into separate programmable procedures. They then design the system and determine the required hardware and software for the business.
COMPUTER PROGRAMMER
Computer Programmers write detailed instructions that a computer has to follow. These instructions when inputted in computer language, are computer programmes or software. Programmers develop software for everything from handling hotel reservations to playing computer games. Systems Programmers write software that control the entire computer system. Application Programmers write programmes that handle specific tasks. The most challenging and time consuming task for a programmer is the process of going over the programme to make sure it turns properly without any errors. This is called debugging the programme and the responsibility for doing this rests solely with the individual who has written the programme.
CAD SPECIALISTCAD stands for Computer Aided Drafting. CAD Specialists are drafters who prepare technical illustrations using computers instead of the traditional paper , pencil and measuring instruments. CAD Software programmers have a variety of symbols, measuring tools and angles installed within the programme. In addition, individuals utilize hardware such as digitisers, graphic tablets, cursor pads, light pens, plotters and printers. Using this equipment, CAD Specialists can draft any type of drawing that can be done manually. These specialists often work with engineers to develop the specifications for various systems, machinery or structures. Drafting or design skills and adequate computer skills are essential to pursue this career.
DESK TOP PUBLISHING (DTP)
Desktop publishers put together designs for a variety of items such as brochures, flyers, posters and newsletters. To accomplish this, they use a computer page layout programme, computer graphics, and a word processing programme. They design the layout of a document using different sizes and varieties of type points. They may also add pictures or graphics that have been computer generated, scanned or are from a computer graphic or art software programme. Creativity, graphic sense, accurate typing, good grammar and an eye for style are important traits for desktop publishers.
INTERNET
The Internet has brought in many changes in our daily life. It has become a media for disseminating information, an arena to transact and extend business and utility for support services. There are establishments and individuals that rely solely on the bargains made available on the Net. Business on the Net is beginning to boggle the mind and there is nothing that has not been caught in the web. This has led to a booming ‘E-commerce,’ which has gained popularity not because of its technological strength but because of its lucrative business options.
Almost anything consumers want, they can shop for or buy on the web. It is not just manufactured products, the web has become an enormously popular international auction house for paintings, artefacts, costumes, books, antiques etc. Even services are now available on the internet. The Travel Industry Association of America reported recently that internet related bookings are expected to soar to $ 8.9 billion by 2002. The New York based research firm Jupiter Communications estimates that the value of on-line shipping will hit $ 6 billion in 1999 and $ 41 billion in 2002.INTERNET AS A FUNDAMENTAL BUSINESS NEED:
That the web has become a very popular market place is due to many factors. The most obvious reason is the convenience it offers to the customers. Another advantage is the enormous information available on the web, which is just a click away. Because of the cross linkage on the web, it is now possible for a consumer to access competitive information and make an informed purchase. Due to the interactive nature of the Internet, the customer can even conveniently bargain with a host of sellers to get the best price. The web enables a customer to do single-stop shopping for a vast variety of services and products. Thus the Internet has become a fundamental business need.
E-commerce is estimated to touch US $ 1.3 TRILLION BY THE YEAR 2003. The Network economy is setting the pace for a new chain of change. More and more companies, all over the world, are putting up Networks.

Computer education, which is nearly 17 years old in India, has made rapid strides in career building for the youth of the country and has outgrown even the most optimistic estimate. But there is confusion about which course to take up and which would guarantee a good job and a secure future? Apart from the courses in the IITs and the Regional Engineering Colleges, which offer comprehensive Degree courses, most of the privately run Institutions make similar claims and offer the same type of courses. As a result, there is a limitless supply of people getting trained in Computer Science. But only a handful of Computer Schools are producing software worthy professionals. Most of these schools do not comply with the DoE regulations. But the Computer world is getting really competitive and in future only those institutes would survive which ozffer modern infrastructure, better facilities and job placements.
A CAREER IN GEOLOGYWHAT IS GEOLOGY?The science that deals with the study of earth, its history, environment, minerals etc. is called Geology. Mineralogy, structural geology, geomorphology, planetology, geological engineering etc. are all branches of Geology.

Career planning is an exercise that is well worth the time invested in it because it sets you going on the path that leads to where you would like to go. This exercise provides you with a lot of clarity regarding your career objectives as well and it best done before you embark on your job search.
Often most people get stuck at the very beginning of the planning process itself. There seem to be too many choices that are throwing themselves at you with all kinds of material gains, fame and wealth, comfort and luxury, glamour and beauty. From acting to singing, writing to banking, software programming to business, choices confuse you. Naturally feelings of self-doubt might creep in at this stage. Am I good enough for that, you may ask, or how do I become successful at this. After some time of pondering over many career paths you may end up thinking that maybe you are no good for any of these things after all.
Here is where a bit of career planning helps. There are two ways of starting off. One is to find out what you really like doing and do it irrespective of the gains and growth patterns and the second is to find out what really motivates you, find out which among the careers gives you what you want and build up competencies for it. Either way you will get what you want - in the first method the journey itself is your reward (though many will discourage you on this path, but don't worry, many have tread this path and quite successfully at that too) and in the second you are carefully working your way to your reward which could be clearly spelt out to be a consequence of your work or occupation.
Whichever path you choose, it is most important to know your individual strengths and weaknesses. Sit down and assess yourself honestly. Think of all your accomplishments, of all the compliments you got, of all the work that really inspired you, of the times when you worked with passion at and jot them all down. You will find that as you note down your victories, your achievements etc a pattern will emerge. You can find that you are good at organizing, at making people comfortable, at leading, at solving puzzles, at physical activity, at playing music or games. Each of these represents a career option by itself or throws up some characteristic in you - qualities that could be good assets in your future career options.
Now list out things that motivate you, that you aspire for, your dreams - things you would want more than anything else in the world. Find your fit between the person you are and the dream you wish to achieve. As this picture gets clearer you become more aware, confident and purposeful. Attributes that serve you well along the way. You have now formed a sharp picture of yourself with specific saleable qualities.
Based on your aspiration level and your aptitude, you can also identify the careers that offer the kind of lifestyle or returns that you wish. If you wish to frequently travel and be in command of a dynamic business you can zero down to careers in marketing with a goal to set up your own firm or to head a large company (the same may not be possible if you inherently like to paint for long hours). It is best to be honest with yourself at this stage because most people take decisions based on glamorous misconceptions about certain careers and later change them. For example if you wish to be an airhostess, check out the sources available to the kind of work that is associated with being an airhostess. Only if you really enjoy doing that kind of work and the rewards that come with it must you opt for it. Else look further for what really fits you. Growth, rewards, recognition and most importantly job satisfaction and a good quality of life come from one thing -loving your job.
Having decided on a particular direction, build competencies. Specific careers need specific education and training. Whichever area you choose to be in, you will fare well if you strive to be the best in it. Leave your individual brand on it. Learn the ropes by acquiring information, by taking up courses, by taking up internships and summer jobs, by learning the economics of the job, by adding special skills that help in handling the job with greater proficiency.
All careers without exception would certainly require a good writing and verbal communicating ability so please work on that, a pleasing and well-mannered personality, a professional work ethic and good inter-personal skills. Work on these important soft skills along with as you plan your career.
A final word! If you have a goal then be clear about it and start walking towards it. You will learn along the way. You will acquire skills and competencies that help you along. The important thing is to start the journey

In order to progress in this profession, you will need to develop the relevant key skills and make good use of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities. In the past, physiotherapists have gained initial experience in an acute hospital, acquiring a wide range of knowledge and skills. However, new initial career pathways are likely to emerge as the pattern of health provision changes. Within The National Health Service (NHS), it is still possible to progress into promoted positions after about two years.
Opportunities exist to become a clinical specialist within a particular field. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) Employment Pack for student members lists no fewer than 40 clinical interest and occupational groups. The potential for some degree of specialisation is immense and covers very specific areas such as hand therapy or therapeutic riding. Some areas, such as sports medicine and animal therapy, are generating new employment opportunities.
Other main areas for career development include:
management (including consultancy);
research;
in-service training or lecturing;
private practice (usually after two to five years' experience).
Some physiotherapists move into health service management and get involved with purchasing health services or managing rehabilitation services. Management may well involve supervising different denominations of NHS staff, not just physiotherapists. Others decide to train in additional therapies such as acupuncture or reflextherapy. There are also growing opportunities with employers outside the NHS and settings outside the health sector altogether.
To work as a physiotherapist in The National Health Service (NHS) you must be registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC). This is a formality as soon as you have a recognised qualification. It is also highly beneficial to be a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP). The key educational routes are the BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and accelerated postgraduate level equivalents. Check the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) website for specific course requirements. Some part-time courses require direct applications outside the UCAS system.
Completion of a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care occasionally allows progression into the second year of the three-year degree course. Foundation degree titles vary considerably across institutions but other relevant subject titles include Rehabilitation, Allied Health and Assisting Professional Practice. Entry is not possible with an HND only, but it may be possible to gain entry onto a validated physiotherapy degree course with an HND in Health Studies (Science).
Some science and other graduates are eligible for accelerated two-year pre-registration MSc degree programmes in Physiotherapy or Rehabilitation Science. Most courses require a 2:1 degree and evidence of undergraduate research or dissertation. Applications should be made directly to institutions. A degree in the following subject areas may help you gain entry to an MSc programme: biological sciences; behavioural sciences; sports science; health-related disciplines; psychology; physiology; anatomy; chemistry; physical education. Graduates of other subjects may apply for places on validated BSc degree courses if they satisfy the basic eligibility criteria. A list of all institutions offering accredited courses at both BSc and MSc level can be found on the CSP website.
Entry to physiotherapy courses is competitive and may require pre-entry experience. Previous experience of work-shadowing a physiotherapist, voluntary work in a health or care setting, or working as a physiotherapy assistant would all strengthen your application. In addition to experience, candidates will need to show evidence of:
good communication skills;
ability to work in a team - there will be regular liaison with other professionals, such as doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, teachers and social workers;
pragmatic problem-solving skills;
initiative, patience, sensitivity and tact;
excellent organisational and administrative skills;
the ability to be firm, encouraging and empathetic;
the ability to establish a rapport with patients and their families.
Physiotherapy students normally receive bursaries from the NHS or Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) to cover tuition fees and UK students can apply for a means-tested bursary to help with living expenses. Some universities may have scholarship funds and student loans are also available for most students. For more information about funding, consult the FunderFinder database and directories such as the Prospects Postgraduate Funding Guide. Your local authority or public library may hold information on local grant-making trusts and charities.
Discrimination on the basis of age is now illegal and a considerable proportion of mature students have traditionally entered physiotherapy. Approved access courses are accepted for entry to physiotherapy degrees.
There is currently a major shortage of opportunities for newly qualified physiotherapists and the situation is not likely to improve in the period 2006-2008. Most recent graduates are having to find imaginative ways of starting their career, for example: casual work as a 'bank' physiotherapist; voluntary work; working abroad; taking a gap year; the Territorial Army; entering private practice earlier than normally recommended; or postgraduate study and research. Some have taken up other posts such as: therapy or physiotherapy assistant; teaching assistant (physiotherapy); educational support worker; or care assistant. The ability to market your specific skills to targeted organisations could be crucial.

Radiology makes the difference in quality patient care and is a major investment area for hospitals
PHYSIOTHERAPY & REHABILITATION
Physiotherapy is an integral part of a patient’s recovery today; sometimes it is the treatment itself. Physiotherapists help patients mobilise, exercise and strengthen muscles, joints and bones, and maintain and rehabilitate various systems of the body.
CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Career as Physiotherapist exist in Govt. and Private hospitals. Some hospitals do not have physiotherapy departments and they direct their patients to private physiotherapy clinics. You have a chance there. One alternative would be as a sports therapist. There is an increasing demand for trained professionals in this field.
LABORATORY SERVICES
Laboratory experts carry out tests like determining blood groups and identifying foreign bodies in patient’s fluids, which a doctor would need for diagnosis. Degree or post-graduate degree in Microbiology or Biochemistry, or a Diploma or Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology will help you to find a job. Opportunities exist both in the govt and private hospitals You could work with a research organization, a blood bank, pharmaceutical company or in a private laboratory.
SUPPORT SERVICE
Though not regarded as important as the medical or para-medical services, the support system complements the two in sustained rehabilitation. Generally, the support systems in a hospital are nutrition and dietetics, pharmacy and counseling
NUTRITION & DIETETICSDiet is very important for a patient’s treatment, especially recovery. Based on the doctor’s advice, Dietitians determine what and when the patient should eat. If you have a degree or post-graduate degree in nutrition or dietetics or a diploma in catering, you can find out a job. You could join food production or food consultant units as Quality control Managers, nutrition labs for research, or diet clinics as consultant.
PHARMACY
As a pharmacist, your job is to supply appropriate medicines. Pharmacists should understand medicines-their functions and contents, and should be able to recognize a doctor’s requirements and handwriting. They should ensure supply not just to out-patients, but also for regular hospital use like for operations and make sure that the hospital always has a stock of frequently used medicines.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
If you have the necessary qualification, to secure a job is no problem. You can find opportunities in the scores of hospitals and health care centres or in the Medical shops as Pharmacist or you can run your own medical store. For the running of a medical store, a Diploma in Pharmacy is a prerequisite.
COUNSELLING
Counselling plays an important role today. A counseller advises patients and support groups including family. For instance, patients with AIDS have to be gradually made aware of their condition and its implication so that all of them are able to effectively cope with the situation. While patients are counselled on how to lead satisfying lives in spite of their condition, the support group is counselled on how to help them do so and how to adjust their routines.
Counselling need not only be for critical or trauma patients. Even someone with a ligament tear might require counselling. In most hospitals, doctors and nurses do the counselling. Now, more social workers and Psychologists are stepping in to the field.
Though any one with training can counsel, a Master’s degree in Social Work with specialization in hospital care will be advantageous. As a psychologist, you can work with mental health institutes or private clinics.
HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATION
The basic segments of hospital administration, like in any other organization, are finance, personnel materials, daily administration and public relations. With the support service and the para-medical departments, the administrator plays a vital role in the smooth running of the hospital.
Career planning is one of the most crucial factors in your life, which needs no emphasis. It is important at least for two reasons. First, whether you opt for a career in jobs or prefer to be on your own, you must appreciate that there is fierce competition for getting a space in the world of work. Remember the old adage, “Survival of the fittest”. Second, in view of new developments primarily triggered off by the information technology (IT) and globalisation of the economy, there are now more options than ever before. You will have to look for these options. Remember also that these are days of specialisation.
Parental expectations and pressure for conforming to social norms often unwittingly do more harm than good. It is the individual who has to make an appropriate choice after weighing the pros and cons of the various options. This, however, does not mean that parental advice and guidance have no role in shaping your career. You should feel free to tell your parents what you want to be and why. Your choice should not be influenced simply by those of your friends. They may have justifiable reasons for making those choices, but your ultimate decision should be based on your own cool judgement. And your judgement, in turn should be based on adequate information about educational and training requirements needed for entering specific careers. Access to a wide range of information about educational and training opportunities is one of the most important prerequisites for career choice.
When should you begin the career planning? The age that could be considered appropriate for making a start is the age of 14-15 years when you enter the Ninth Class under the 10 + 2 pattern of education. This is the formative age to shape your career. Much more important reason, however, is that it is after the 10 + 2 level that a wide variety of course options are available to choose from. This means that as the first step you will have to choose from the three streams viz., science, arts and humanities, and commerce and the appropriate combination of subjects, when you enter the 10+2 level. To a great extent, this choice would determine the course options available to you after the 10 + 2 level. For example, if you want to take up engineering degree course, you should not only join the science stream but should also opt for the combination comprising Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Before you enter the 10 + 2 stage, you may like to consider which syllabus provides wider options. As you are aware, there are three Secondary Boards viz., the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE) and the State Boards, each having its own syllabus. While the CBSE and ICSE syllabuses permit combining biology and mathematics, not all the State Boards provide similar opportunity. For example, the Andhra Pradesh Board for Intermediate Education (equivalent to Higher Secondary Board) does not. It limits your option, because at this stage itself you will have to decide whether you want to join the engineering college or medical and agricultural colleges. However, as the number of CBSE and ICSE affiliated schools in States is small, you may have to opt for the State Board syllabus.
Before you embark upon planning your career you may have to consider two issues:
1. Do you need an immediate job because of some adverse family circumstances?
2. Is your family financially sound enough to pay for your professional education?
If you need a job, say after you complete the secondary stage, but still want to pursue higher education, you may like to take up a suitable course through distance learning mode. There are now many options available. You can study according to your own pace and convenience. You can even study both the secondary (Class 10) and higher secondary (10 + 2) courses through the distance-learning mode. As regards the second issue, the stark reality is that it is becoming increasingly difficult for many middle class families to meet the spiralling cost of professional education. Scholarships, freeships and other financial supports are scarce. You may be aware that in professional colleges there are two categories of seats “free seats” and “payment seats”.
Since the tuition fees for “free seats” are highly subsidised, you pay much less compared to those for “payment seats”. Generally, “free seats” are allotted to students on the basis of the performance at the entrance tests. You will, therefore, have to strive very hard if you want to get a “free seat” in professional colleges. If your family is unable to bear the cost of “elite” professional courses, you may choose a professional course, which also promises a reasonably good career at an affordable cost. It is prudent to cut your coat according to the available cloth. However, the financial consideration alone need not determine this option. There are other good reasons too for seeking a career in these professions. This option should also be considered if you cannot get through entrance tests for professional courses. Career planning should be preceded by two steps:
1. Assess your strengths and weaknesses, likings, aptitudes and interests.
2. Gather as much information as possible about the various educational opportunities and choose one that conforms to your assessment.
Both are easier said than done. Therefore, it is necessary for schools establishing their own career and course information centres and provide guidance and counselling to their students. In the absence of such facilities in your school, try to collect information from different sources. Here is a note of caution. Never take the claims of flashy advertisements in newspapers and other media at their face value. More often than not, they are issued by fly-by-night operators to allure unsuspecting students. Ascertain the status of these institutions.
If you do not intend to pursue university education, you may opt, after the 10th class, for various Vocational Courses available in different areas. The most sought after ones of course are the polytechnic courses of three-year duration leading to diplomas in different branches of engineering and technology. The advantage of polytechnic courses is that in some branches a diploma holder can make a lateral entry into degree level engineering courses. A clear idea about the vocational courses, therefore, would be helpful in taking an appropriate decision.
As stated earlier, at the 10 + 2 level you have three options:
1. The Science Stream
2. The Arts/Humanities Stream and
3. The Commerce Stream.
In Addition, there is the Vocational Stream. The Subjects offered in these streams are given in the Annexure. One problem you may face while choosing the combination of subjects is that the desired one may not be available in many 10 + 2 level institutions (higher secondary schools and junior colleges) Particularly in rural areas. A brief account of each of the streams follows:
Science
There is a common belief that science is the most important subject, compared to humanities or even commerce. There is also a general feeling in our society that the best students opt for science. This is an assumption of most parents, students and teachers. In fact, brilliance and intelligence is not the exclusive preserve of science. If a student is interested in doing engineering courses, such as civil, mechanical, electronics, metallurgy, computers, the option should be for a combination of mathematics, physics and chemistry (MPC). If you wish to take up medicine, dentistry, agricultural science, dairy science or biological sciences (biochemistry, biotechnology), the combination should be biology, physics and chemistry (BiPC). It is true that the advantage of choosing science stream is that you can shift to the other two streams viz., humanities and commerce after 10 + 2. It also opens up the gateway to a large number of career and course options, even if you cannot make it to the most coveted courses in engineering, medicine or agriculture. In several universities, particularly in the South, besides the usual combinations, such subjects as microbiology, computer science can be chosen at the BSc level.
Apart form doing the degree level courses in science with the conventional combinations you can also choose degree courses in several emerging professional areas, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, nursing, computer, business administration, hotel management, tourism management. You can also opt for courses outside the university stream, such as hotel management, fashion technology, industrial design, packaging, aircraft maintenance engineering, government accredited computer courses and a host of post 10 + 2 level vocational courses. However, if you are very clear that science is not your cup of tea, there is no point in wasting two precious years simply because it keeps many options open. It would rather be desirable to explore the opportunities the other fields offer.
Arts/Humanities
It is not widely appreciated that humanities also offer many options after 10 + 2 other than the usual BA degree course. Except for courses in science and technology areas, they can take up many other courses such as travel & tourism, advertising, journalism, performing arts, business management, etc. Humanities is also the favourite choice of many students who sit for the civil service examinations.
Commerce
Next to science, commerce stream opens up a variety of options after 10 + 2 stage. Some examples are: company secretary-ship, chartered accountancy, cost accountancy, business management, computer. Although chartered accountancy, cost accountancy or company secretary-ship course can be taken up after 10 + 2 (after successfully completing the Foundation Courses) you should be aware that each year only a small percentage of those who take the examinations get through. It may, therefore, be wise to obtain the basic BCom degree first. BCom with Computer as one of the combinations is now a much sought after course
In all the three streams, students can now opt for job-oriented vocational subjects at the first degree level available in selected colleges affiliated to many universities (Vocational Education). Another recent development has been the diversification of courses, professional in nature, at the first-degree level itself, although the number is institutions offering such course is still small. International postgraduate programmes of five-year duration after 10 + 2 in several subjects are being introduced by some universities
Whatever stream you may select, you should put in your best efforts, which would surely lead to the path of success. Obtaining high marks in the qualifying examinations will put you in a comparatively better position to get into the course of choice after the 10 + 2 level.
The schematic presentation of the pathway to course options would provide a general idea about the choices available at the end of each of the stages: pre-class 10, class 10, 10 + 2, graduation and post graduation.
Being a DJ (Disco Jockey) can be a lot of fun. There are many advantages of being a DJ like you get to listen to the coolest of music.
Career prospects
At the beginners level, assistant DJs in clubs and discotheques are paid Rs.1,500-2,000 per month. One can also play at private parties and earn handsome returns per night. Unfortunately many parents want their children to become doctors or engineers, but creative writing has a lot of scope. One can become a journalist, a short story writer, a novelist, a playwright, a copywriter -- the possibilities are endless. Writers find opportunities to contribute (freelance or otherwise) to local newspapers, websites, or school papers. This provides materials to begin building a portfolio.
A visit to a beauty parlour has become part of the schedule rather than a luxury or a pastime today. Women in Kerala have always been beauty conscious. Looking good is the in-thing, and frequenting a beauty parlour is no longer a taboo today. Beauty has become a subject that has crossed the gender barrier and to a large extent the age barrier too. Gone are the days when looking beautiful was the domain of the young. Cosmetics and beauty-care products have raided even the homes of the common people.
As a result, there has been a proliferation of beauty parlours every where. These parlours may deal with just one aspect of beauty like skin care or hair care or provide total beauty and hair care. A lot of tact, a well groomed appearance and courtesy are essential in a beautician. Clients look for a clean beauty parlour where the assistants are neat and friendly as well as professional in their approach. Beauticians must be well versed in giving facials, manicure, pedicure, skin treatments for pimples and acne, waxing and threading. The major function of a hairstylist is to style hair in a complementary and attractive fashion. He must discuss exactly what the patron wants to be done. He must be experienced in colouring, frosting, perming etc. This career choice offers a lot of scope for entrepreneurship.
The acceptability of sports and physical education as a career has gone up several times with the entry of prominent corporate bodies as sponsors of sports and events during the last decade. Some of them have also come forward to extend training facilities to sports persons. This shows the enormous potential that lies ahead for sportsmen.
Active sport careers are short. A few manage to find some work connected with their sport as managers, coaches or by promoting products. The majority have to look elsewhere for employment unless they are already employed with some organization by virtue of their sports prowess.

Animation is the art of conceiving an action by drawing inanimate objects or characters, which are made suitable for filming. It has lately become so high paying a profession that it will soon be matching the pay packets of software professionals. Television channels are increasingly relying on animation techniques to reduce ho-hum viewing.
JOB OPPORTUNITY
If you have an itch to draw, you can take up this career. Students who have completed higher secondary school and are versatile in drawing, you can enroll in the Visual Communication and Design course. Any graduate in fine arts or any arts student with an aptitude for drawing would do well by joining production houses or studios as a trainee.
Television production houses are increasingly relying on taking in graduates in fine arts or animators who have qualified in 3D Studio Max. Or you can find an opening in some animation companies like Millitoon, Crest Multimedia, Ram Mohan Biographics etc. You can also find openings in advertising agencies as Visualisers.
HOW TO START ?

There is no other institution in India teaching Animation Film Design.
The modelling scene has now become an acceptable option for the young and the ambitious. Fashion shows and Beauty Pageants have become very highly competitive field and it is a tough job. Behind all the glamour and the money is a lot of dedication, hard work, sweat and sacrifice. Facial mobility, a good figure and a confident attitude are the important prerequisites for entering into this field. .
Beauty is a talent and should be promoted. This is behind all the Beauty Contests and Beauty Pageants. Gone are the days when our youngsters, not to say their parents too, were keen on keeping up our traditional values. They could not think anything that would erode human values and modesty. Our youngsters of today are more than willing to shed all inhibitions. At least some of them have learned that being beautiful has a lot of advantage and beauty is a big business. It is an instrument that could propel them to stardom and fame. Fame is the load-star of most of the contestants and they are all focused on fame and money. And hence, all the beauty contests and beauty pageants.
Kerala too has become a stage for such pageantry. It is quite strange that in a state where women would rather die than share a seat with a man in a bus, girls goaded on by their parents, unabashedly show off their proud assets, heralding before a salivating audience that the bonds of tradition are fragile and proving that where there is a will, there is a way to make money and fame.
In the world where holiday options are endless, what matters is service. In Kerala, where tourism development is in its nascent stage, it is this distinctive feature of hospitality service that eventually attract or distract tourists. Although the leading players of the hospitality industry have entered the scene, there is still a heavy shortfall of skilled man- power to meet the rising demands. There is a lot of openings waiting for those with professional training. In the travel and tourism sector , a wide range of career options exist. Today, travel and tourism is probably the world’s largest industry and currently in India alone there is an annual demand for about 30000 trained personnel in this field.
A PEEP INTO TOURISM INDUSTRY
Tourism has been the fastest growing industry in the world for the past 50 years, and today it is the world’s largest industry. It is India's third largest export industry after Readymade Garments and Gems &Jewelry. Though the revenues faltered in 1997 and 1998 because of the Asian meltdown, there has been a steady increase in the earnings. But Tourism Industry needs a revamping.
Tourism is a global happening, an expression of man’s natural instincts to move from one place to another. In the olden days travel was fraught with trials and tribulations. Hence, perhaps, the origins of the world, TOURISM: from ‘travail’ or trouble in French and from ‘tripalium (Latin) meaning a wooden instrument of torture.
Our tourist attractions warrant for more tourists than we are getting. No other country can match India as a tourist draw. If a tourist wants mountaineering and trekking, which mountains in the world can compete with the Himalayas? If he wants the sea and the sun, where else would he find thousands of miles of virgin beaches against back drops of swaying coconut palms? If he wants to visit ancient sites or ruins, which country can match the monuments of the Hindu, Budhist, Jain, Muslim, Sikh and Christian faiths? Or if he is in search of secluded spots, away from civilization, the Lakshadweep Islands with their sparkling clear waters or the Andamans with their thick rain forests, white sands and coral reefs have few parallels. If he wishes to study, Yoga or meet men of religion, then our gurus and sanyasis and their Ashrams have much to offer. Whatever his interest, India has unparalleled attractions to offer to the tourist.
The potential is so high that foreigners visiting India are convinced that so much more can be done to promote Indian Tourism and destinations abroad. What is needed is a tie up among the Airlines, Travel and Tour Operators and the Hotel industry. Unless these essential wings come together, no attractive package can be worked out. It is up to the Board of Tourism Industry and Trade to formulate a joint strategy involving both the Government and the Private Sector.
Tourists who stay in 5 star and deluxe hotels in our country are usually happy. But those who opt for 2, 3, and 4 star hotels often complain about the high tariffs of these hotels in relation to their poor facilities. We must, therefore, see that we do not price ourselves out of the market. Government must set aside and lease land for medium and low priced hotels. There is a great need for 2 to 3 star hotels with a high level of cleanliness. It is the business of the Health, Immigration and Customs officials at the airports to see that the tourist is not harassed. It is the business of the taxi driver and the shop- keeper to make the tourist feel satisfied that he has not been cheated. It is the business of the tourist guide to present a proper image of India’s problems and achievements and of her rich cultural heritage. It is the business of the airline and railway clerk to serve the tourist promptly and courteously without demanding bribes. The slogan, ‘Welcome the visitor, Send him back a friend,’ may seem a time-worn cliché, but is not. India is one of the few countries which still offers service of high quality. Let not cupidity and greed overtake the wonderful hospitality for which India is known all over the world.
WILD LIFE TOURISM
Wild life Tourism has been looked upon mainly in economic terms. Our sanctuaries can earn much by way of foreign exchange, besides generating employment opportunities.
For city-bred young people, a stay in a Sanctuary or National Park can be an experience, which can not be equalled. In an increasing urban environment, a family visit to such an area can lay the ground work for a useful and realistic facet of education.- a knowledge of nature, and how each species functions and interacts with the others. Knowing a tiger near causes a sensation in your nerves and it is truly awe inspiring. The very nearness of this savage beauty, seen or unseen, in its natural habitat is an experience of a life- time.
According to a report published by the Brussels-based World Travel and Tourism Council, Tourism is the world's most rapidly growing industry, and that by the year 2005, the contribution of Tourism to the world economy would be more than doubled from the base level of 1994. India's share in the global tourism is a mere 0.4 per cent and the share of Indian arrivals currently stands at a mere 7 per cent, at the same time the market share of Rajasthan and Goa is 30 per cent each. In order to promote tourism, Government of India has evolved a Tourism Policy.
TOURISM POLICY 1998 - ITS OBJECTIVES
To promote tourism with the tourist and the pilgrim as the focus
To provide special facilities to the ‘religious, adventure and ‘monument based traveller
To improve the efficiency of the industry, for enhanced social and economic benefit, and consequential increased economic benefits, including increased employment generation
To ensure the participation of all the stake holders in society, including the travel trade and tourism industry.
To provide quality services to all domestic & international consumers and stake holders
To prepare and implement Master Plans for integrated development and marketing of identified circuits
To improve, diversify and expand the marketing of the tourism products of our state.
Tourism along with Information Technology and Biotechnology could be the engine giving a big push to Kerala's economy in the coming years. Tourism has emerged as among the few economic alternatives to develop the state's economy. The state's potential for Tourism has been well accepted. As a destination, Kerala can attract the independent traveller with its unique qualities like the pristine environment, the rich and vibrant culture and the high quality of life for the local inhabitants brought about by the state's investments since Independence in the fields of education, health care, institutions of democracy, social justice etc. The state is also endowed with its unique natural, cultural and social resources.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Promising career options are plenty for those who are smart, intelligent, amiable, highly communicative and those who like going places and meeting people.
In the world where holiday options are endless, what matters is service. In Kerala, where tourism development is in its nascent stage, it is this distinctive feature of hospitality service that eventually attract or distract tourists. Although the leading players of the hospitality industry have entered the scene, there is still a heavy shortfall of skilled man power to meet the rising demands. There is a lot of openings waiting for those with professional training.
WANT TO BE A TRAVEL AGENT?
Travel agents assist people with travel plans for business and pleasure. The agencies are paid a commission by companies that provide the services and these include airlines, cruise lines, hotels and car rental companies. The agent’s main function is to book travel arrangements and it is necessary for him to find out the client’s departure date, the destination, and the mode of transportation. It is also essential to know if the client wants to travel the most economical way or first class. The best travel arrangements are not always the cheapest. An inexpensive flight that forces the traveller to change planes three times before arrival may not be best fare for a business executive. The same fare, however, may be perfect for a student travelling on a limited income. While planning international trips, the agent may be responsible for obtaining the necessary visas for the client.
Polytechnics and vocational colleges offer short-term training in certain aspects of travel like ticketing and reservations. Postgraduate diploma and degree programmes of one to two years of duration, which are a lot more exhaustive in content, are offered by a lot of universities.
Environmental Science is concerned with the space that surrounds us. It finds solutions to problems owing to environmental degradation, the energy crunch etc. It has created a demand for skilled professionals who could suggest ways to manage resources economically and even the public informed of issues and development,. It is going to be a career of the future
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The demand for environmental protection services is expected to increase considerably by the turn of the century. There is also an increasing demand for skilled personnel in the specialised technologies like oceanography, leather, footwear, plastic, gems, metals etc. Environmental Scientists are appointed in the R & D Departments of large industries to work on issues of pollution control, efficient waste and effluent control, management and planning. Large public as well as private sector organizations, and industries like paper, cement, dairy products, pesticides and pharmaceuticals etc. need environmental specialists to monitor their waste disposals.
Consultancy firms provide environmental impact assistance for industries and the Government, by assessing the ecological viability of large scale projects. Government organizations like the National Productivity Council, Metallurgical Engineering Consultants and institutes like IIT’s and CSIR labs also provide consultancy services. The Government of India and various universities offer scope for Research and Development. It includes the National Environmental Energy Research Institute, National Metallurgical Laboratories, Central Leather Research Institute and the India Toxicological Research Institute. Options are also available with some private organisations involved in environmental protection and awareness. Career options are also available as Environmental Journalist.
HOW TO BECOME AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROFESSIONAL?
To become an environmental professional, you should have a degree or postgraduate degree in Environmental Science.
The changing patterns of modern life are largely reflected on the womenfolk with more and more of them turning away from traditional house-hold preoccupations, for reasons predominantly economic. Women of today have a distinct presence in every aspect of life. Their presence is keenly felt in diverse areas such as administration, health-care, hospitality sector, science & technology, politics, police, military. airforce, etc. More and more of them are coming out every now and then from professional as well as from other institutions. They are getting into and exploiting newer and newer avenues than before.
In the growing unemployment scenario, Home Nursing offers a large spectrum of hope, especially for the rural women, who are educationally ill-equipped.
Trained Home Nurses, who are young, polite and sophisticated, can be seen catering to the demands of an increasing number of people who find little time to care for their aged, ailing parents or infants or relatives.
Nearly some 30 institutions in the state including societies like SEWA, Red Cross and private institutions like St. Antony’s Mission Home Nursing Service, Amrita Health Services, Help-in-hand etc. offer careers in Home Nursing. A Home Nurse can earn more than Rs.1000/- a month in addition to food and accommodation. These institutions all over the state have formed an association called Kerala Nursing Service Association and under them more than 2000 women are employed in different house-holds.
Institutions like St. Antony’s Mission Home Nursing Service recruit girls who have at least passed 8th Standard. The selection is held on the basis of an interview. Those selected will have to pay Rs.350/- towards fees. Accommodation is free and facility for cooking is also available there. The three-month course has topics like anatomy, physiology, health and hygiene, nutrition etc. At the end of the course, an internal assessment is conducted and a certificate issued, besides giving the student a good placement.
A Home Nurse is not supposed to do work like cleaning and sweeping. Her work is in relation to the child/the ailing or the aged. The institutions extend the services of the Home Nurses only on introduction. A maximum of three months is the service term of one Home Nurse and afterwards, she will be transferred and another one will be sent in her place. This is to avoid problems that can erupt after the girl nurse gets attached to the family and vice-versa if she remains there for a long period.
SEWA, which alone has a work force around 2000 women in Kochi has a branch in Thiruvananthapuram. The Home Nurse is to be paid a monthly salary of Rs.1, 500/- each in addition to the initial registration fee. There are SEWA women who are specialists in post-delivery care.
The Red Cross recruit only those girls who have passed SSLC. They give a monthly pay of Rs.1500/- for a Home Nurse if she is posted at a hospital, and Rs.1300/- for placements in a house. They Charge a registration fee of Rs.500/- and no service charge is levied
The science that deals with the study of earth, its history, environment, minerals etc. is called Geology. Mineralogy, structural geology, geomorphology, planetology, geological engineering etc. are all branches of Geology.
Geologists play an important role in exploring the mineral wealth and natural resources. As a Geologist, your main functions would be to assess natural disasters, its effects on environment, to explore the areas where mineral fields, oil and natural gas fields etc. are found, under-water resources etc. You have to assess whether the conditions in particular areas are suitable for laying railway lines, construction of roads, bridges, buildings etc.
Geologists have to explore natural resources deep in the sea. Their services are also important for oil explorations. They have to assess the quality of soil by conducting geo-physical and geo-chemical tests. Construction of reservoirs, roads, bridges, underground tunnels etc. is based on the report of the geologist about the density of the earth.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Those who study Geology, can become Geologists/ Geographers/ Meteorologists/ Oceanographers. As Geologists play a vital role in the exploration of valuable mineral resources, there are numerous avenues for them both in the public and private sectors. The Union Public Service Commission conducts tests for placements in Central Government Agencies like the Geological Survey of India and the Central Ground water Board. Similarly, Coal India, Mineral Exploration Authority, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Hindustan Zinc and several other organisations engaged in mineral explorations utilize the services of Geologists. The Defence and Para-military forces utilize the services of Geologists.
Horticulture is an intensive form of agriculture engaged in areas of floriculture (flowers), landscape horticulture or arboriculture (trees, shrubs and vines) and promology (fruits). The job of a PR person is to work primarily towards establishing and improving mutual relationship, understanding and goodwill between his company or organisation and the clients and the customers, various other groups and the public at large. It is a planned and sustained programme conducted by an organisation’s management. It monitors awareness, opinions, attitudes and behaviour inside and outside the organisation. It counsels the management on the establishment of new policies and programmes that are mutually beneficial to the organisation and its publics. It establishes and maintains two-way communication between the organisation and its publics. In order to speak for and on behalf of the organisation, the PR person must know the organisation thoroughly. Thus it has become a top management function today identifying, establishing and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships between an organisation and the various publics on whom its success or failure depends.
An organisation is a group of persons coming together with a common purpose- to produce and sell certain products, services or ideas. It has to get the job done by a certain number of people with the support of many more people. These people who are the concern of the organisation are the ‘publics’ in the vocabulary of Public Relations. These ‘publics’ form an integral part of the body of the organisation, and are very important factors for its existence. JOB OPPORTUNITIES
PUBLIC RELATIONS as a fast track career, has grown phenomenally recently. In an age when image consciousness holds the key to success, the scope and influence of public relations is constantly widening. With the growth of industry and business, the need for well trained, polished and hardworking PR personnel is growing day by day in every branch of industry, business and services run by the private, government and the public sector. CAREER planning, to the uninitiated, would be a one-time process, something that is done by high school students or fresh graduates at the beginning of their working life to choose a profession or career path. However, nothing could be farther from the truth.
Considering that most people change their careers (not jobs) as many as four to five times in their working life, career planning is, and ought to be- a lifetime process.
It is a process that needs to be regularly reviewed, updated and changed.
While there are any number of things that can affect the way your career shapes up- circumstances, changes in attitude, your family, the economy, market trends and even the stage of life you are in, a successful career plan is one that can adapt to these changes and reinvent itself when required.
Like the changes in a man's life span, his career too undergoes various stages of development; and, just like a person's life, career options too are flexible in the initial stages, and have a propensity to become more predictable later on. This is not to say that you cannot break free of your chosen career at an advanced stage. -
In fact, many people have done just that! But, it is also a fact that your options will be limited once your career follows a set path for a certain amount of time. So, what is the ideal stage to explore your career options?
When do you begin to get into the skin of your career? When do you outgrow it? Is there something called a seven-year itch or a mid-career crisis? When is the ideal time to switch over to a new career? If these are some of the questions that cross your mind when you think of career planning, this article attempts to answer some of them.
A whole new world: Assessment
For a baby, its first real comprehension of faces, of sounds, voices and colour can be an overwhelming experience. It opens up a whole new world for them. Then curiosity takes over, prompting them to explore the world around them.
Compare this with the feelings you go through when you are young, inexperienced and not sure about what you want to be doing for the rest of your life.
At the assessment stage, you are almost like the baby as far as your future career is concerned- unaware, gullible and irresolute. In this stage, you are still getting ready for your life's work.
This stage is characterised by a lack of direction, in that you are not sure what your values, strengths, and weaknesses are. You are curious to explore your options and find out what fits you best.
Taking assessment/psychometric tests or approaching a career counsellor or coach for advice and direction can be of great help to you at this stage of your career. Proper counselling can help you get started in the right direction straight away without loss of precious time or resources.
Swinging times: Exploration
In the exploratory stage of your career, you are researching on the opportunities that exist for your kind of qualifications and personality traits. This stage is characterized by feelings of confusion, and excitement. You may feel overwhelmed by all the jobs and opportunities that exist as you begin the process of researching.
You may find yourself being pulled in different directions. If you have a positive approach at this stage, you can learn about many possibilities that you can explore. However, to be successful, you have to do some serious preparation and research.
Steady road ahead: Commitment & retention.
You have had your fair share of adventure dabbling in diverse professions, testing waters and having fun. Now you are ready to settle down and stabilize your career.
In the commitment stage, you will feel confident about what you want to be doing for a career. At this stage your focus will be on gaining knowledge and experience, setting long-term goals and adopting a success-oriented mind-set.
You will want to remain committed to your career by continually updating your skill sets and staying on par with industry standards. This is the most important stage of your career building process.
Restlessness and change: Transition
After years of working very hard to achieve success in your career, you suddenly find something amiss- it could be the lack of growth opportunities, dearth of challenges or plain boredom and disenchantment and you suddenly realize that you have fallen into a rut.
You could call it the (nth) year itch, mid-career crisis, world-weariness or burnout- these are all symptoms that your career needs a transition.
The transition stage is characterized by feelings of discomfort because you are unsure of what you will be doing next (and/or if you will be happy).
If the spirit of adventure still beats in some corner of you heart, now is probably the time you will break free, and make conscious changes in your career direction by seeking what you crave most, be it new opportunities, job satisfaction or better work-life balance.
Career cycles vary, and patterns change from individual to individual. For some it may have very few changes or some may go through a transition repeatedly.
Some may even have very quick career cycles- they may complete the entire cycle within a year or so! For others, it may take ten or twenty years to come the full round.
A clear understanding of the various stages of career development not only helps to identify one's current priorities and chart out a career plan for the future, but also helps leaders and managers chart an effective career path for their employees.
Exploration
In this stage, individuals hover on to their preferred area of work. It is a macro level understanding of a person's professional interests. Individuals explore the various opportunities available to them and identify their area of interest.
This is an ideal stage for assessing employee interests and skills. Charting out a career plan according to employee interests keeps employees motivated and therefore ensures higher productivity
